Scenario planning is a favorite tool to assist with short and long-range planning. As a professional planner, I have always been interested in the relationship between how land is used and the transportation systems that shape where and how communities grow. I have relied on geographic information systems throughout my career. While in graduate school, I identified environmental impacts of a roadway expansion project and mapped the changes in vegetation along the right-of-way. Early in my career, I gathered land use data to evaluate the cumulative impacts of a corporate relocation from the dense city center of Chicago to a semi-rural location in the suburbs of Northeastern Illinois. The project resulted in public transit shuttles and an on-site child care facility to reduce traffic impacts. Most recently, I worked with a team from the Michigan Department of Transportation, Statewide and Urban Travel Analysis Division, and CityExplained, Inc. (formerly Placeways LLC) to complete a scenario planning project evaluating community master plans in West Michigan. These planning projects gave community stakeholders performance metrics to visually see the impacts of future developments and helped community leaders to shape the future they wished to see.
